chin augmentation patient

Mentoplasty or chin surgery, can help to make the neck and profile appear more defined. Though most people focus on other imperfections first, having an appropriately sized chin can do wonders to create harmony in the face. Often times a chin implant may be recommended for patients seeking rhinoplasty to create better balance among all the facial features. Because a weak chin may make a large nose appear even larger, adding more prominence to the chin can therefore improve the appearance of the nose. Chin augmentation can also help to minimize sagging skin in the neck region.

Chin implants come in varying sizes and shapes so that patients can find one appropriate to their proportions. Men and women who have a good immune system and properly functioning jaw and teeth may be good candidates for a chin implant if they are dissatisfied with a weak or receding chin. Those that have previously used injectable fillers, to create the appearance of a stronger chin will enjoy the permanent results chin implants offer.

Chin Augmentation Surgery

During surgery for the placement of a chin implant, an incision is made in the crease just under the chin or inside the mouth where the lower lip meets the gum. A pocket is made for the implant to be inserted. After the implant is inserted over the existing bone, fine sutures are used to close the incision.Local, IV sedation or general anesthesia is used for patients’ comfort during chin implant surgery. When performed alone, the procedure can take 30 minutes to 1 hour. Surgical time may increase if being performed in conjunction with other plastic surgery procedures.

Chin Implant Recovery

Mild pain and swelling will be apparent following surgery. Discomfort can be controlled with medication prescribed by the doctor. The increased volume in the chin can cause the skin to feel tight. This feeling will fade as the skin stretches and adjusts to the new chin. Chewing will be difficult at first, so liquids and soft foods will need to be consumed during the initial days following surgery. Most patients begin to resume normal activity around the 7 – 10 day mark. Activity in which damage can be caused to the face should be avoided for several weeks. After 6 weeks the majority of the swelling should have subsided. At this time the results of the surgery will be more visible. Incisions inside the mouth will not leave visible scars. Those that were placed under the chin are inconspicuously placed, so scarring should not be noticeable.Contact Aesthetic Specialty Centre Plastic Surgery & Dermatology today at (770) 393-9000 in Roswell or (706) 467-6500 in Greensboro, for a consultation on chin implant surgery.
