What Is JUVÉDERM®?
JUVÉDERM® is a dermal filler collection created by Allergan Aesthetics, the makers of
BOTOX® Cosmetic. The company offers six different dermal fillers, each designed to address specific needs for different areas of the face.
All JUVÉDERM® dermal fillers contain a modified form of hyaluronic acid (HA) as their active ingredient. HA is a substance your body produces naturally and that is an important component of healthy skin. It helps your skin maintain hydration and helps keep it looking taut and plump. The same effect can be seen when modified HA is injected deep into the skin.
JUVÉDERM® fillers mainly work by adding volume to the skin. The HA in the formula attracts and holds onto water, bringing plumpness and hydration to the treated area. The treatment may also help boost collagen production in the skin, further increasing facial volume and skin elasticity.

Made with more cross-linking than some other products from this line, this filler is an ideal choice for patients with more prominent wrinkles, particularly nasolabial folds and laugh lines. Thanks to its robust consistency, JUVÉDERM® Ultra Plus XC gives lift to the skin to help soften deep wrinkles and folds. The effects can also last up to a year with good skincare.

Is JUVÉDERM® Right for Me?
If you are looking for a safe, natural-looking and long-lasting solution to fine lines, wrinkles, facial hollowing and thin lips, then JUVÉDERM® could be for you. These dermal fillers are intended to soften moderate to severe wrinkles in the mid-face, fill in facial hollows and enhance the lips in anyone 21 years and older.
While JUVÉDERM® fillers are considered generally safe and there are no special tests required before getting these injections, some patients may not be good candidates. If you have a history of severe, multiple allergic reactions, the FDA advises against this treatment. We also don’t recommend JUVÉDERM® to those currently pregnant or breastfeeding and those with active skin infections.
The JUVÉDERM® Treatment
This simple, in-office treatment starts with an in-person consultation with Dr. Yune and his aesthetic team. This is an opportunity for you to discuss your concerns and goals and for us to evaluate your problem areas and develop an individualized treatment plan.
Treatment is usually given on the same day as your consultation since there is no preparation involved. Your injector will begin by cleansing the targeted areas, followed by carefully injecting the product into the dermis, deep dermis or hypodermis, depending on the goals of treatment.
If you are pain-sensitive, we may apply a numbing cream before treatment to keep you comfortable. Each JUVÉDERM® syringe also contains lidocaine, a local anesthetic to help with discomfort. This means you should feel any pain; however, mild pinching or stinging is common.
The entire treatment takes 15 to 30 minutes to complete.
JUVÉDERM® Recovery & Results
You can resume your day as usual immediately after treatment. However, you may want to avoid the following for the first 24 hours to prevent product migration, infections and bruising:
- Alcohol
- Direct sun exposure
- Saunas
- Vigorous exercising
- Touching or rubbing the area
Lingering soreness immediately after treatment is normal. Some patients experience mild redness, swelling or bruising following treatment. These effects resolve on their own.
Your initial results will be noticeable immediately after treatment. However, the product takes up to two weeks to settle and integrate into your skin. At this point you will see the final results, which may include smoother skin, improved facial contours and fuller lips. These results last between six and 24 months, depending on the type of filler used and the area treated.

Are dermal filler injections safe?
Yes, dermal filler injections using hyaluronic acid fillers are generally safe when performed by a qualified provider. However, as with all facial injection procedures, there are potential side effects such as temporary redness, swelling, skin injection site tenderness, or bruising. In rare cases, severe allergic reactions, skin infection, or skin inflammation may occur. Patients with multiple severe allergies, a history of previous allergic reactions, or compromised skin quality should disclose their medical history during the initial consultation.
How long do results from Juvéderm® last?
Results from a Juvéderm treatment can last anywhere from 6 to 12 months depending on the injection site, the type of filler used, and individual factors like facial muscle movement, skin problems, or lifestyle. Patients report complete resolution of initial swelling within a few days, and final results typically appear once the injectable gel treatment settles into the facial tissue. For many clients, touch-up or repeat treatments every year help maintain results.
Who is a good candidate for Juvéderm®?
Good candidates for Juvéderm treatment are adults seeking to improve skin smoothness, address age-related volume loss, or soften smile lines without undergoing surgery. It’s not appropriate for those with active bleeding disorders, severe allergic reactions, or those planning laser treatments or other facial injection procedures in the same area during recovery. Individuals with certain mental health disorders (including body dysmorphic disorder) or muscle or nerve conditions should consult their health care practitioner immediately before undergoing treatment.
Are there any precautions I should take before or after treatment?
Yes. Before your dermal filler injection, avoid herbal supplements, blood thinners, and alcohol to minimize the risk of bruising. After treatment, avoid direct sun exposure, vigorous exercise, and touching the injection site for 24 hours. These steps help reduce side effects like skin injury, temporary redness, or treatment and temporary tightness. Let your provider know if you have eyelid skin darkening, skin sores, or any recent skin problems.
