What is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia refers to the abnormal enlargement of male breast tissue caused by an imbalance between estrogen and testosterone levels. This condition can occur in men of all ages and is often associated with genetics, hormonal fluctuations, medications, or underlying health conditions.

Males with over-developed breasts, a condition known as gynecomastia, can feel self-conscious about their bodies. Although a large number of men, nearly 60% of men, experience some form of gynecomastia over the course of their lives, it can be a source of great emotional discomfort. Often it occurs in adolescent boys and disappears over a few months or years, but in others it may be permanent. Causes of an enlarged male breast include puberty, obesity, aging, certain medications and steroid use. It may also be due to an underlying medical condition such as tumors, a genetic disorder, chronic liver disease, hyperthyroidism, Klinefelter Syndrome or Gilbert’s Syndrome.

Although weight loss and exercise can help to alleviate an enlarged male breast in cases of obesity, in other cases plastic surgery is necessary to remove the localized fat and/or excess glandular tissue.

Common Causes of Gynecomastia

  • Hormonal Imbalances: Changes during puberty or aging can disrupt hormone levels, leading to the development of excess breast tissue.
  • Certain Medications: Drugs like steroids, anti-anxiety medications, and some antibiotics can contribute to enlarged breast tissue.
  • Health Conditions: Obesity, thyroid disorders, or liver disease may increase the risk of gynecomastia.

If you’ve noticed persistent symptoms, our team at Aesthetic Specialty Centre can help determine the underlying cause and recommend a personalized treatment plan tailored to your needs.

Signs and Symptoms of Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia symptoms may vary but often include:

  • Enlarged Breast Tissue: A noticeable increase in the size of the male breasts, often accompanied by swelling.
  • Tenderness or Sensitivity: Discomfort or pain in the chest area.
  • Firm Lump Under the Nipple: A palpable, often rubbery mass of glandular tissue beneath the nipple.

This condition affects approximately 30% of males at some point in their lives. If these signs resonate with you, our board-certified specialists in Georgia are here to help.

Male Breast Reduction Procedure

Male breast reduction surgery typically takes an hour and a half to two hours under local anesthesia. If the condition is caused primarily by fatty tissue, liposuction may be a suitable treatment technique. With liposuction, a narrow, hollow tube called a cannula is inserted through a small incision, made around the edge of the areola or in the underarm, and moved back and forth in a controlled fashion. The fat is dislodged and extracted through a vacuum device attached to the cannula. In cases of excessive glandular tissue, it may be excised with a scalpel through an incision made around the areola or in the underarm. The tissue, fat and extra skin are removed and the incision is closed with sutures, surgical adhesive or surgical tape. Liposuction can be performed in conjunction with this method. At Aesthetic Specialty Centre Plastic Surgery & Dermatology, we understand what a sensitive issue gynecomastia can be. What is the fastest way to cure gynecomastia?

Male breast reduction surgery is the most effective and quickest way to address gynecomastia. This surgical procedure provides immediate, noticeable results and a flatter chest contour.

Can gynecomastia go away on its own?

In some cases, particularly during puberty, gynecomastia may resolve without treatment. However, persistent or severe cases often require professional intervention.

How can I treat gynecomastia without surgery?

Non-surgical options, including weight management, hormonal therapy, and CoolSculpting® Elite, may help reduce mild cases caused by excess fatty tissue.

Will there be scarring after surgery?

Our board-certified plastic surgeons use advanced techniques to minimize scarring. Incisions are strategically placed, and most patients experience minimal discomfort and residual scarring.
