Overview

Do you have isolated deposits of fat that have not responded to your diet and exercise efforts? Put them to good use with the revolutionary fat transfer procedure that allows you to actually move fat from one area of the body to another. Fat taken from problem areas like the abdomen, back or thighs can be harvested to augment areas where you might want a fuller appearance, such as the buttocks.

There are a number of potential benefits to the fat transfer procedure:

  • Patients enjoy the double benefit of sculpting one area of the body and augmenting another
  • The substance injected for the augmentation is the patient’s own cells, eliminating the risk of an allergic reaction or rejection of the substance
  • Fat transfer offers long-lasting results, even permanent for most patients
  • Results of a fat transfer look and feel natural

The best candidates for the fat transfer procedure are men and women that have areas of fat they would like to minimize. There will need to be sufficient fat available for harvesting and injecting into the new location. Patients should have obtained a healthy weight prior to surgery and will be committed to maintaining that weight after their procedure. Patients should also be in relatively good health overall, with realistic expectations of what they can expect from their fat transfer procedure.

The Fat Transfer Procedure

The first step in the fat transfer procedure is removal of stubborn fat deposits using liposuction. This procedure is typically performed on an outpatient basis using local anesthesia. A discreet incision is made, through which a narrow tube, known as a cannula, is inserted. The cannula gently loosens the fat cells in the treatment area before suctioning them away for harvest. Once the fat is removed, the incision may be closed using a small suture, surgical tape or a compression dressing.

The removed fat is then purified and prepared for injection. Injections of the harvested fat are made in the area to be augmented, using multiple injections to ensure a smooth and even delivery of the fat. The area will then be gently massaged to distribute the fat cells in a way that will achieve the smoothest and most natural results.

Fat Transfer Recovery

The liposuction portion of the fat transfer procedure does result in some minor discomfort, as well as swelling and bruising along the incision sites. Oral pain medication will keep you comfortable during the first day or two and compression garments may be worn to help reduce the amount of swelling and bruising you experience. Most patients are able to return to work and normal activities within a few days, although you may have some slight swelling linger in the treatment area for a number of weeks.

When fat is transferred to the buttocks, you will be given a special garment to wear to protect the area and ensure proper integration of the fat. Usually, more fat than is needed will be injected at first, since a percentage of the fat cells are reabsorbed by the body. This will result in a swollen look to the buttocks that will improve in the weeks following your procedure.

You will also be advised not to sit on the buttocks and crush the newly transferred fat for many days. Other than this restriction, recovery from the fat injections tends to be relatively quick with little discomfort to worry about. Duration of the results may vary somewhat and you may require follow-up procedures at a later date to maintain your desired appearance.
